Client Spotlight - Meet Leigh

Meet Leigh (pictured right with Martina)

Q. Tell us about yourself.

An avid traveller with a love of music and wildlife, I work as a Corporate Travel Consultant and relish my weekly Pilates classes.

Q. How long have you been practicing Pilates & Yoga?

I’ve been practicing Pilates for 9 months

Q. Why did you start?

I could see that my largely sedentary lifestyle would lead to long-term health problems if I didn’t start making some immediate changes.   Pilates had always appealed to me, so when I came across the Sense of Space Beginners Course, I jumped at the chance to try it - it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself!

Q. How has your practice changed over time?

Initially I was simply focused on getting through a class, and becoming familiar with the Pilates movements and postures.  At the moment I’m working on better articulation of my movements and also the flow of breath (I tend to forget about the ‘breathing’ part – particularly in the more challenging classes when, by hours end, I’m struggling to tell my left from my right!) Oh – and I can now do a triceps push up!!!!!

Q. What brings you back to the mat week after week?

Martina’s teaching style is a big draw for me – I feel like I’m getting an anatomy lesson in addition to Pilates and that has helped me understand my body and the way it moves and reacts better.  My recurring neck and shoulder pain has significantly decreased in severity and I have learned exercises to alleviate the flare-ups that do occur (I’ve not had to visit the Chiropractor once in 9 months!).  Mostly though, I just feel so much better after each class – I have to really focus my full attention on each and every movement and there is something almost meditative about that – it’s relaxing and energising all at the same time and lasts long after the class has ended.

Q. How long have you been coming to Sense of Space?

Nine months

Q. What is your favourite thing about Sense of Space?

There is something so friendly and unpretentious about Sense of Space -  there’s a real sense of community and the team has been so welcoming and encouraging.  I know that I will always be challenged, learn something new, see some lovely people and have a good laugh whenever I visit :)

I'd never felt comfortable enough to stick at anything prior to Sense of Space - I always felt intimidated by the 'cool' people and the austere vibe of places, or alienated by the teaching style, so after a class or two, I'd never go back.  Sense of Space is the first place that I've been able to go where I feel that the teachers are genuine and kind, and even the clients are friendly and open.  There's nothing worse than feeling like you're being judged  (particularly when you are sweaty and gross and twisted into an unflattering pretzel shape!), but I've never ever felt uncomfortable or judged at Sense of Space and that's one of the reasons that I love coming.  You guys have done a beautiful job in maintaining an open, welcoming environment - coming to class really has become one of the highlights of my week  :)

Pilates for Pregnancy - Starts this Sunday with FREE goodie bag!

We are offering a 4-week Prenatal Pilates course for just $88. Martina, one of our very knowledgeable Pilates teachers, will give you the tools to take your practice home with you and also to apply pregnancy-appropriate modifications for exercises should you wish to attend classes from our regular schedule.

Enjoy bonding with your unborn baby while getting yourself physically prepared for the changes that are taking and will take place in your body. This will be an intimate class where you can ask questions and take things as slowly as you need to.

"Pilates and meditation was the best things for my pregnancy- especially as my belly grew (and hip and back pain became uncomfortable realities!). It also helped me heaps during labour and trimming, strengthening (and loving) my new mom-body afterwards. I can't recommend it enough."  Porscha C.

The first 10 registrations will recieve a FREE goodie bag too (that even includes an organic cotton baby singlet....sigh...it's just too cute!).

The course is $88 for all four lessons and we will continue to run these in consecutive blocks.

We look forward to meeting you on the mat and sharing this exciting time with you!

Client Spotlight - Meet Rob

Q. Tell us about yourself.

Hi! I'm Gemma's husband. I'm 35 and I've spent most of my adult years walking around on various factory floors. I've got a background in design, but I've relegated this to a hobby really.  I was very athletic when I was younger but haven't done anything fitness-wise for AGES.

Q. How long have you been practicing Pilates & Yoga?

I've now done the beginners course 3 times... leaving it so long between each time I come back that I have to do the beginners all over again. I've only just started coming to the other classes (three times a week) for the last few weeks. I intend to keep coming this much.

Q. Why did you start?

Shamefully (especially as I am the husband of a pilates instructor), I have left it so long that my life of factory work and almost complete lack of exercise, has started to cause me pain in numerous parts of my body.

Q. How has your practice changed over time?

I am already starting to feel less pain and am beginning to get to know my body better.

Q. What brings you back to the mat week after week?

Fear of serious pain and postural problems when I get older.

Q. How long have you been coming to Sense of Space?

Since it opened... on and off.

Q. What is your favourite thing about Sense of Space?

The peace and quiet and the time to focus on my self.

Welcome Sarah!

Sarah has joined the Sense of Space team, teaching Yoga every Friday morning at 7.30am.

Sarah dabbled in practicing yoga for years before a serious chronic illness showed her the importance of a regular yoga practice. Following establishing a restorative yoga practice, she re-built her health and decided to study to be a teacher to help other people discover the many physical, mental and emotional benefits of yoga.

Sarah has completed an RYA 300 hour two year yoga teacher training course and now teaches a vinyasa flow style from the Ishta lineage of Kavi Yogi Swarananda Mani Finger and his son Alan Finger. This style focuses on pranayama (breath work), flowing asana (poses) and simple meditation techniques as a holistic approach to balancing busy lives and maintaining your health and happiness.

Sarah believes yoga is for everyone and enjoys sharing her love of yoga and its transformative, healing and therapeutic effects with her students.

Book a class with Sarah and meet her on the mat this week!

Q.  Tell us about yourself.

I grew up in the eastern states and moved to Perth about 18 years ago for work, intending to stay a year or two and I’m still here. My husband and I live in Subiaco with our little fur-ball and my husband’s daughter. I completed my law degree in Sydney before moving to Perth and worked as a lawyer until around 7 years ago when I decided it was time for a change to a less stressful career. I currently work for a Japanese company in Perth in the IT department. I love travelling with an element of adventure or activity – climbing mountains, biking across the countryside, trekking through the jungle – but also love a relaxing holiday in a resort. Apart from yoga, I enjoy a lot of other sport and activities – exercise makes me happy.

 Q.  How long have you been practicing Pilates & Yoga?

I first tried yoga about 10 years ago and tried an occasional class but didn't start regular classes in 2013.

 Q.  Why did you start?

I have always done a lot of running, and had developed a few injuries from over use/over training. I needed something to improve my strength and flexibility to help me prepare for my first full marathon. A friend at work gave me a free pass to a yoga class - it was much different to what I remembered from my past experiences, but maybe it was more my attitude that had changed - and I was hooked!

Q.  How has your practice changed over time?

Well I can know touch my toes which I really struggled to do when I first started! I am a lot stronger and more flexible but also a lot more familiar with the poses and putting it all together. I surprised myself on a recent work trip by actually doing yoga in my hotel room or in the park without an instructor or an app telling me what to do. Also the motivation of the winter challenge helped a lot to make that happen.

 Q.  What brings you back to the mat each week?

I am generally motivated to exercise so it's more of a challenge keeping me away! Yoga is now just a part of my day – it’s just something I want to do. With some of the timetable changes recently, working away and some other unexpected commitments I have found it hard to get to classes in the past week or two and I've really missed it. I love the style of the instructors at Sense of Space and their gentle encouragement to push me a bit further each time and the challenges of a power vinyasa class. Looking forward to getting back to normal shortly.

 Q.  How long have you been coming to Sense of Space?

I joined sense of space in January 2014 on the introductory special and haven’t looked back.

 Q.  What is your favourite thing about Sense of Space?

The fantastic teachers and the convenient location.

Thanks Natalie for being in our Client Spotlight this month and congratulations again on blitzing our 2015 Winter Attendance Challenge!

Natalie took home the Grand Prize of three months Pilates & Yoga membership and a full goodie bag with all sorts of special treats, all to the value of $665!

"Thank you Sense of Space for starting the winter attendance challenge. I spent my past 2 winters training for marathons -with many, many hours devoted to running - and now that my running is limited by injuries, I wanted something else to focus my efforts. The challenge came at the perfect time for me - physically and mentally - and I want to thank all my amazing yoga teachers for their fantastic classes every week. It's been a great experience and I'm feeling much stronger for it. Thank you Porscha,Natalie, Jill and Gina (and previously Kayoko) for your fantastic energy and encouragement. I'm so grateful to have found such lovely teachers for this journey. I love coming to your classes and always miss it if I can't be there. Back on the mat tomorrow. xx"
